Pretend you didn’t know that by planting an acorn you could get a big majestic oak. Pretend you didn’t know a caterpillar could turn into a beautiful flying butterfly. Sometimes we forget how amazing God’s amazing creation is.
Something else we might take for granted is when the faithful people of God persevere through trial. That too is remarkable. Rev 12:11, they overcame by the blood of the Lamb. Nehemiah 4. The building of the wall had reached its halfway stage. The initial enthusiasm had waned. The Israelites are seeming only to build walls for their own protection. Psalm 5:10.. Psalm 104:35. Opposition came from Sanballat and Tobiah who were angry that they were building the wall. 4:1-3. They didn’t want the city to be fortified. Undaunted, they continue with faith and fortitude, 4:4-6. Hostility then intensifies, v 7,8.
But they remain resolved through prayer and preparation 4:9-13. And then crisis: Nehemiah addresses fear, v 14: And I looked, and arose and said to the nobles, to the leaders, and to the rest of the people, "Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, great and awesome, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses."
God then frustrates the enemy’s plans, v 15. And the work continued, v 16ff. Observations: 1. How God saves. He saves through trust and rally. Throughout the Bible, people appear too weak, the task appears too large.. but His people are not alone. The Lord fought for them but they had to rally and trust in Him.
2. Life prescription. Look forward and pray, and then move forward and act. V 4:9.
3. Contemplate God’s greatness and power and then do the next right thing. When you pray, move your feet, from an African proverb. 4. The battles that benefit our character and confidence, He will expect us to step up to the plate and be tenacious and trust Him. Work as if depends upon you, pray like it depends upon God. 5. Life is not all about you, it’s all about Him. 6. Discouragement is one of Satan’s greatest tools. He’s all the time telling us we can’t do it, we can’t win. We get discouraged with ourselves, with other people, with our circumstances.
We must maintain our confidence.
The battle belongs to the Lord.
