Strive to Excel

In building up the congregation, 1Cor 14:12

What would it be like if we applied everything about being excellent to our worship service?

The purpose of being together is both to glorify God and also to build up and edify one another. And Paul says in 1 Cor 14 we should be striving to excel in that. We want a visitor, when he enters our service, to fall on his knees and say, God is among these people, God is in their midst.

Isa. 45 and Zech. 8:23. God is pruning the nation of Israel of evil and having them realize God is in their midst. God wasn’t interested in their rituals, what He wanted was to be honored by the things that He had told them to do and that they do so because they wanted to.

Why worship? Why strive to excel?

1. We serve a holy God. Ex. 19:10-12, 22. We need to understand how significant it is to come into His presence. That means God cannot be approached casually. The people in Exodus trembled in His sight, they saw the power and might of God. In Lev. 8-9, they spent an entire week consecrating the sons of Aaron to serve God. We must put thought into our worship, we must come prepared and not do so haphazardly.

2. Priests take worship seriously, and we are God’s priests today. 1 Pet. 2:5,9. We all draw near to Him and when we do so, He will be glorified. And when we don’t, judgment will come upon us. We are the temple, the body of Christ. Eph. 2. Let us offer to God an acceptable worship with reverence and awe for our God is a consuming fire. Page through 1 Chron. 23-29 and notice the excessive detail God wants followed in worshiping Him. There was training that went on as to how to worship God.

3. Understand our purpose, which is to glorify God and encourage one another, 1 Cor 14:26., To strive to build up the congregation.

4. Plan to worship well. 1 Cor 14:40. It will take planning ahead of time. Want to be a song leader? You need to put in the time and effort to do it well. Whatever you want to do in service to God, work at it so you can do it well. And we’re not just talking about skill, we’re talking about our attitude.Seek growth through worship. 1 Cor. 14:25,31.

People will see that God is among us when we plan our worship services well and strive to excel.
