Psalm 42:3. As the deer pants for streams of water so my soul pants for you O God, my soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God, the next verse asks.
Strength in you, Psalm 84. The focal place has been the place of God’s presence. In the OT, that was the temple.
There was a new excitement today in coming to the building to worship together.
Isa. 51:1 - "listen to me you who pursue righteousness, who seek the Lord. Look to the rock from which you were hewn." In verse 2 he says remember your origin. Verse 3, we are Zion, we are the place where God dwells.
The power of assembling:
We come to do this to honor our great King. This is about God. This is what He wants us to do. Psalm 145:1-4. Assembling is ennobling. Rom 11:36: "for from Him and through Him and to Him are all things."
We do so in unity with other believers. There is encouragement in numbers, there is a confidence in our mutual belief. Heb. 10:23-24. Hold fast the confession of our hope. Then let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds. So assembling is not just vertically focused, it is also horizontally focused. And then verse 25 which we have all heard many times. Some have made it their habit to no longer associate with the people of God, he is saying. When you do that, it is not just you who is harmed, but those whose faith you could be encouraging as well.
We are vitalized in godly, holy associations. We feel better when we leave this building then when we walked in. Do we need any other reason to meet together?
The power of assembly is that it is a foretaste of what is to come, meeting In hope of the greatest assembly. Rev. 21:2. A new heaven and a new earth, the old having passed away. All that’s left is the holy city. We can’t really grasp how very wonderful and awesome that will be. We will not look back on this world and miss what we are doing now. We will be filled up completely with the glory of God.
