Starting in 2 Sam. 7, we look at the importance of the home and what God expects, as well as how Satan has torn down the model of the home God desires. This is a key text in the Old Testament, the promises to David.
In verses 11-12, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. The shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.
In Verse 13 he sets the standard for what He desires for the home when He says I will be to him a father and he shall be a son to me. In subsequent verses he talks about how He wants the house to be. He tells David what He wants him to do and that He will bless him if he does.
There is a connection between this passage in 2 Sam. to Gen. 1-3. God is setting up Adam and Eve in a similar way to what he tells David.
Points:
1. We are created with a mission. He wants us to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. Along with that is the idea of dominion, of rule. Gen. 2:15, God put Adam in the garden to tend it, keep it and protect it. And that is where his failure comes from. He doesn’t protect it. Adam exercises dominion over the earth as he names all the animals. So this is also a mission for marriage because to fill the earth God needed both man and woman. There is a need for cooperation between the sexes to fulfill this command, that is not the message in the world today. The message in our society today is men and women don’t need each other. But God says man’s glory is in his strength, woman’s in the fruitfulness. Adam is to tend the earth. Eve is the mother of all creation. This is your glory, women. This is your purpose. It is vital, it is important, it is what glorifies God.
2. My home is Eden. (side note from Brent – Look up Michael Foster and follow him). God expects us to protect it, men. Dominion and rule comes about as we have children and they have children and our families grow. Men and women both have the mission of rule and fruitfulness. Male and female are oriented in different ways toward accomplishing God’s mission for humanity. Men, video games and pornography offer fake dominion. The are virtual methods of creating the illusion of expressing masculinity. Whatever you “build” or “conquer” in a video game means absolutely nothing in real life. The expression of sexual desire in pornography is an improper use of the desire God created in man. It is meant to bring husband and wife closer as they work together to subdue their world. Women, having a career is not how you fulfill your mission. You may be able to fulfill it while working a job. but that job is not your mission.
3. Satan wants to disrupt my home. He does this from the very beginning. Did God actually say you cannot eat of any tree in the garden? A simple question derails Gods plan. Did God actually say only men are to protect and rule? Did God actually say women should just stay home and clean? Of course God’s mission for humanity far outweighs warping message of Satan, but he works to confuse and destroy the home and society. Satans lies and deceptions don’t change Gods purpose for us. Let God build a house for us.
